Safety Awareness
Local 342 cannot stress enough how important the safety training classes are.  We are looking forward to a year of
complete participation in the program.

Besides training classes, Local 342 has other concerns for this year.  There is a need for an open line of communication
between Company safety representatives and your Local 342 Safety Department. As we were told by Company
representatives, there will be someone available to speak with at all times to ensure member safety.

Local 342’s second concern was on renovations within stores.  We need to be given notice of any renovations, which
will be taking place.  We also need to know what department will be affected, when this renovation will take place and
who this renovation will affect. Local 342 will not accept Companies changing your work environment with Company
growth in mind instead of member safety. So if you see and/or know about any renovations that are planned or are in
full swing, let us know about it. Help your Local 342 Safety Department ensure your safety as well as your Brothers
and Sisters.

The third concern is the Shop Steward Inspection Program when Stewards complete and follow up on all reported
hazards. Local 342 also needs to know of any illness or injury within the Local 342 shop.  Who got hurt, what they
were doing, when they got hurt, and where they got hurt.  The more Local 342 knows about how injuries happen the
better we help to prevent them.

The Union is also looking to improve the equipment that the members use in their stores.  This past year Local 342 has
been supplying the Meat Departments with new sharpening steels.  We will continue to have them distributed on an
ongoing basis to our stores.  For the Deli and Seafood Departments Local 342 proposed to the Companies tabletop
sharpeners. Making the equipment that the members use safer is a step in the right direction.

Understand that Local 342 cannot do it alone.  We need assistance from all members in reporting hazards to maintain
a safe working environment. We all need to raise safety awareness and be on top of safety issues.  Accidents will
always happen, but knowing how to do things
SAFETY FIRST will prevent unnecessary injuries.

Looking forward to seeing all members at Local 342’s Safety Training classes. Until then,
SAFETY FIRST, it prevents
the worst
.
Being happy and healthy in your work environment is an
important part of your everyday living.  For this reason Local
342 has decided to implement a Safety Awareness Program.
A JUISC (Joint Union Industry Safety Committee) meeting
was held this past April 2007.

At this meeting between your Company Representatives
and the Local 342 Safety Department Representatives it
was announced that Safety Classes were imperative to
ensure our on-going awareness that all shops recognize
SAFETY FIRST and perform member job tasks, everyday,
the safest way possible.

Local 342 has hired a professional safety training staff to
conduct these classes for the members and are very
confident in the success of the yearly program.  Five
thousand plus members would be trained during these
classes.  The training classes will be broken up by Company
and will make for less disruption of normal activities within
the stores.  All stores will be notified of their schedules
before hand, so there is no reason for anyone not to
participate.
