It has been reported that 95 % of sudden cardiac arrest victims die before reaching a hospital. That number can be diminished by learning CPR. This knowledge gives Local 342 shop stewards the ability to save someone’s life in a time of need.
Hundreds of shop stewards participated in Local 342’s CPR-First Aid certification classes to educate them on how to recognize emergencies and provide basic care until advanced medical personnel can respond to the scene. Shop stewards received training in breathing emergencies, cardiac emergencies, and how to treat various injuries.
Ivan Archer, Shop Steward at Pathmark 638 in Brooklyn walked away from the class a stronger person. “The Union gave me the opportunity to grow as a person. I took the class seriously and really got a lot out of it. I know what to do when there is an emergency. I can save a life.”
For other shop stewards, the course was a refresher for them from previous years training. Jeffery Hersh, Shop Steward at Pathmark 623 in Baldwin responded to an emergency at the store some years ago. “The classes are great because they keep you sharp on procedures and update you on more improved safety steps.”
Many of the shop stewards applauded the method of classroom discussions combined with videos and hands on exercises. “It was great; the way we watched videos, had discussions and then actually practiced what we learned. When there is an emergency, you just ‘do it’. The class made it easier to remember the steps.” touted Shop Steward Victoria Stein of Waldbaum’s 601 in Stony Brook.
The Local 342 Safety Department continues to support safety in the workplace. Shop stewards wear many hats but after this session of classes, they stand a little taller knowing they are properly trained and prepared for whatever emergency may come their way.
Congratulations to all the Local 342 shop stewards who participated in this year’s classes. Thanks to your unity, Local 342 can proudly say that over 80% of our stewards are certified in CPR – First Aid. You are a great influence to the industry and other Unions for a safer work environment.
