The Local 342 Safety Department on occasion, encounters
companies locking exit doors in their stores. This is not only
against the law but is a very serious safety issue.  The
Local 342 Safety Department is distributing Bolt Cutters as
part of an ongoing campaign to combat this unsafe
practice.
To date, Safety Representatives have handed out over 100
Bolt Cutters to ensure that just in case an exit door is
locked, members can correct the safety issue immediately.
Shop Stewards are required to check shop exits and
building exits every day. If the door is padlocked, they can
use this additional safety equipment to get it unlocked.
Larry Kahl Shop Stop Steward of A&P/Waldbaum’s in
Holbrook feels safer knowing that if a door was locked,
action could be immediately taken.
Members should also be aware of the dangers of locked exit doors. Kenny Roper, Meat Cutter of Waldbaum’s in Howard
Beach was relieved to know that a Bolt cutter was in the department.  Kenny had experienced a house fire and stated that
you only have seconds to find your way out. Having a bolted door gives you one less option and that is one too many.
Members should always report safety hazards to Store Management immediately and if they do not respond then call
your Local 342 Safety Representative at 718-982-0342 Press 2 and always remember, SAFETY FIRST, IT PREVENTS
THE WORST!
